Reputation and Risk Management in the Age of AI
Republished from LinkedIn
“Reputation is no longer what people say when you leave the room—it’s what artificial intelligence decides about you before a human ever does.”
From Crisis to Credibility
Seven years ago, in my Forbes.com column “PR Warfare: When an Enemy Targets Your Firm in the Press,” I chronicled a case where a company under attack learned that the best defense wasn’t counter-attack. It was composure, transparency, and consistency. That lesson still holds. What’s changed is the speed, scale, and visibility of reputational risk. Where journalists once shaped the narrative, now AI summaries, search snippets, and algorithmic trust scores do.
The AI Effect on Reputation
In my recent keynote for the Board of Advisors in Dallas, I shared new data on just how dramatically AI now shapes credibility and trust:
- 58% of U.S. adults have viewed an AI-generated search summary (Pew, 2025)
- 80% rely on AI to inform at least 40% of their searches (Bain)
- 60% of searches now end without visiting a company’s website
- 59% of purchase decisions are influenced by AI-powered recommendations (ResearchGate)
In other words, AI is now your first reputation audience. The quality, accuracy, and authority of what AI finds about you determine how your story gets told.
High-Authority Coverage Rules
If you want to control your reputation, control your narrative. Independent, third-party validation is the new PR currency. Articles on Entrepreneur.com, Forbes.com, or Inc.com (not self-written blogs) still carry the highest weight with both humans and algorithms. AI systems prioritize citations from recognized media and credible research references. Awards can strengthen your authority, but only if they are independent and authentic. Paid vanity awards and fake accolades can actually backfire, creating red flags for AI reputation models that now cross-reference citation quality.
Review Platforms: Handle with Care
Consumer review platforms like TrustPilot can be valuable for early-stage SaaS or direct-to-consumer brands—especially when trust scores stay between 4.5–5.0 with frequent, legitimate reviews. However, manipulating reviews or coercing feedback can tank your trust score and trigger long-term reputational harm. In short: if you can’t win authentically, don’t play that game.
Thought Leadership: The Best Risk Insurance
Education—not promotion—is the modern engine of trust. Teach. Explain. Illuminate. Don’t sell. Topics like Robotics in Healthcare, Creative Innovations in Funding, or Introducing Kids to Technology position you as a credible, consistent voice in your field, and make AI recognize you as one, too.
Your Next Steps: Build, Broadcast, Be Found
- Publish your insights on credible platforms
- Repurpose podcasts and panels into articles
- Collaborate with networks like Board of Advisors to amplify reach
- Document your expertise, because what isn’t documented doesn’t exist
Reputation remains the ultimate currency. In the AI era, it’s also your algorithmic identity, and it’s worth guarding well.
